2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a more defined direction.

The president stated that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet community desires.

Trend of Key Recruitment

The news follows a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Here is the full text from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our audience.

The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His management and experience in the competitive gaming space is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all eager to keep observing the progress of the game in the time to come.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, risks, and challenges that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as creation continues.
