Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
