The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
