Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
